Donald Trump said that he didn’t discuss having Mexico pay for his proposed wall along the US’s southern border in a lengthy meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on Wednesday.

During a joint statement and press conference held by Peña Nieto and Trump in Mexico City, the Republican presidential nominee was asked about whether the two discussed his most central campaign promise: to build a massive border wall along the US-Mexico border and have the Mexican government pay for it.

"We didn’t discuss payment of the wall," Trump said. "That will be for a later date."

Trump said that the two men held what he considered to be "a very preliminary meeting."

"I thought it was an excellent meeting," Trump said. "And we are, I think, we are very well on our way."

He promised that he said "a lot of" things that were "very strong" because "we have to say what’s happening."

"And there is crime, there is a lot of crime, and there is a lot of problems, but I really think together we will solve those problems," he said. "And I think the president and I will solve those problems. We will get them solved. Illegal immigration is a problem for Mexico as well as for us. Drugs are a tremendous problem for Mexico as well as us. It’s not a one-way street. And we will work together and we will get those problems solved."
